The Power of Positivity in Gaming

One thing that tends to characterize online gaming is a lot of swearing and finger pointing. It is easier to blame others than to look at your own faults.

And the games truly reinforce this behavior. Whether they are modern military shooters or fantasy lands, most games are filled with destruction and violence. But I think that there is one popular game that goes against the grain at least a bit. That game is Overwatch.

Overwatch was released in the year 2016 as the first new franchise from the well known development house Blizzard. They created billion dollar franchises like Starcraft, Warcraft and Diablo, but after more than a decade of no new franchises, they were finally working on their magnum opus called Titan.

Titan was supposed to shadow their super-successful game World of Warcraft, which used to peak at over 12 million players a few years ago and still being played by millions today, although the game is now 14 years old. However, they bit off more than they could chew and after years of development, the game Titan was scrapped, the team was severely downsized and given weeks to come up with another game concept.

This new game concept was born out of love for online shooters and one of their major goals was to create a shooter, which had a lot of very diverse and unique characters to play. In the game, teams of six face off on objective based maps, on which they have to complete that objective before the time runs out. You choose one of the 26 heroes in the game and set off to battle the other team.

For more on the story and the game, I would definitely check out this incredible documentary on the game’s conception and the lead up to the release. I have watched it multiple times and I always tear up in certain sections.

I have loved the game since the release in 2016 and I continue to enjoy it today, although I’ve been playing less than before. Maybe the seven month baby at home has something to do with that. I could talk for hours about why I love the characters and the whole universe but I would just like to leave you with the following message of positivity from all of the characters.

I dare you to not tear up!!!

You’re amazing!!! ❤
